[This is preliminary documentation and is subject to change.]

A website may behave differently in different browsers. Most of these differences should be handled during development of the website - it should be "cross browser".

TOPICA is designed and tested to run in the following popular browsers:

Browser

Company

Notes

Internet Explorer

Microsoft

Internet Explorer (IE) exists in several versions, that differ significantly in functionality, standards compliance, performance, etc.

Currently (2017) several IE-versions (7, 8, 9, 10, 11) are in use among TOPICA users. Therefore, TOPICA must support all of the mentioned IE versions. Of these, only version 11 is comparable to the other major browsers in terms of compliance with current W3C standards. The differences between the various IE versions are FAR greater than the differences between say IE11, Chrome, and FireFox.

Consequently, getting a website to run across the various IE version is MUCH harder than getting a website to run across say IE11, Chrome, and FireFox.

See Internet Explorer Versions

Chrome

Google

There is a known bug in one of the third party components (Telerik RADcontrols for ASP.NET) used in TOPICA: "Floating windows" do not work properly when using the "zoom" function in the browser (especially at 110%).

Workaround: when using Chrome, always use zoom = 100%.

FireFox

Mozilla

In theory, TOPICA should run in any "modern" browser - but no guarantee is given, since TOPICA has only been tested with the above mentioned browsers.

TOPICA is currently NOT optimized for use on mobile devices (not optimized for touch, no "responsive design", reliance on framesets).
